Top 3 Communications Tips

Here are my top 3 quick tips for communicating: 

1- Keep it simple. It does take a certain skill set to condense complicated or complex information down to an easily digestible message. In the legal profession, this may look like avoiding legal terminology or jargon when speaking with clients. For internal staff communications, it is best to keep things as high-level as possible and do not get into the weeds with oversharing. While transparency is very much valued, the main point that you want the reader or listener to take away needs to be emphasized. Other details that detract from the main message can be left out. 

2- Be authentic. In 2024, authentic leadership is essential. Younger generations coming in to the workforce highly value authenticity. Forget the formalities when possible and just be human. Give yourself and others grace. When you are starting a meeting or even a speech, feel free to provide the audience with a 'real' story. Is there something relatable you can share? 

3- Personalize your message. Whenever you can, use your client's first name. In emails or in conversation, bring up something that you know about your client, colleague, or staff member. Are they huge Cubs fans? How did their daughter do in her gymnastic competition? This shows that you care and makes your working relationship smoother to navigate.
