How to implement a recycling program in the workplace

I have implemented a recycling program at two of my employers' offices; previously during my employment at ARAG Legal Insurance and within my current employer's headquarters at the Iowa State Bar Association. 

The cases were different as ARAG already had a corporate Green Team established. Timing was of the essence, as the company moved to a new building where no recycling program was implemented. At the Iowa State Bar Association there was no recycling program but I knew that leadership was interested and had just not found a solution. 

In both instances, being located in the Des Moines metro area was helpful, as I found Recycle Me Iowa, a company located locally that would contract to provide recycling bins, materials on what can be recycled, and come to the office to empty the bins on an agreed upon basis. 

When making a business case for a company recycling program, below are some tips. 

1 - Cost savings: Adopting a recycling program can significantly reduce waste management costs. 

2- Enhanced brand image and customer loyalty: Consumers are increasingly conscious of a company's environmental responsibility, seeking out brands that align with their values. For example, I remember one large client that required partner organizations to implement sustainability efforts to do business.

3- Regulatory compliance: Proactively implementing recycling programs can ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including any mandates on waste reduction or recycling. 

4- Employee satisfaction: A recycling program at the office can increase staff morale. I've worked with employees who before a recycling program were taking recyclables home to be collected with their personal recyclables. Having a program at the office improved overall workplace satisfaction for these employees.
